Air North was founded in 1977 in Whitehorse and styles itself Yukon's airline. Beginning with bush and charter flying, it grew into a scheduled carrier linking the territory with southern Canada. The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation of Old Crow holds a significant ownership stake, and a large share of Yukon residents are said to hold shares.
The network links Whitehorse with Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and northern communities including Dawson City, Old Crow and Inuvik. Boeing 737-400s and 737-500s fly the jet routes, with ATR turboprops on gravel strips in the north. The airline is affectionately known for baking its own cinnamon buns for passengers, a genuine onboard tradition.
