Syrian Air: History and Facts
Syrian Air, formally Syrian Arab Airlines, dates back to 1946 when Syrian Airways began domestic operations. The carrier was briefly merged into United Arab Airlines during the union between Syria and Egypt, re-emerging as an independent flag carrier in the early 1960s with Damascus as its home.
The airline operates a small fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft and older types from Damascus, with a network shaped for years by sanctions and regional conflict. It once flew Boeing 707s, 727s and 747SPs, and its long history makes it an interesting subject for pilots who enjoy classic Middle East operations.
